European Adventure Recap - Westminster Abbey

Friday October 23, 2009
London, England
Originally called The Collegiate Church of St Peter at Westminster, most people simply refer to it as Westminster Abbey. In this photo it resembles Notre Dame in Paris.
"An abbey is a Christian monastery or convent, under the government of an Abbot (Father) or an Abbess (Mother Superior), who serves as the spiritual father or mother of the community. The term can also refer to an establishment which has long ceased to function as an abbey, but continues to carry the name—in some cases for centuries." Westminster Abbey is one such establishment. It no longer functions as an Abbey, but still carries the name.
The picture below shows the tall cement columns that run along the outside of the building.
The front facade
This is a close-up of the large round window over the front doors

In this view you can see the front of the building and the two towers that stand to the side of the building
It's hard to grasp the scale of just how tall this is
The detail of all the buildings not just in London, but everywhere we went in Europe, simply amazed me

See the faces?

Quite the Gargoyle - this should definitely keep out evil spirits!
