Thunder Over Louisville

Thunder Over Louisville
It's reportedly the Nation's largest fireworks show - and it's right here...in the Ville.

The day was beautiful, so the crown was massive

Mike and Shannon as we weaved our way through the crowd

Shannon got 4 free tickets to the Bats game, so we enjoyed some baseball (too bad they lost).

Back at our "spot" everyone hung out....

....and tried to stay warm.

The sun was out, but the wind was howling.

So, we took whatever measures were necessary to ensure a little warmth.

Finally!  Time for the show!

Weigh-in Wednesday

Well, Weigh-in Wednesday comes a day late....because I forgot that yesterday was Wednesday.  And I haven't posted my weigh-ins the last couple weeks because, well, life has just been busy.  But alas......since the last time I posted, I am down again by -1.0 lb.

This brings my total weight-loss to....... -10.2 lbs.!!!!!!!

I'm still somewhat amazed at myself for being able to do this.  I like that the weight is coming off slowly (except that not many people seem to notice I've lost any).  But I think it's better to lose weight slowly because I will have a greater chance at keeping it off.  I'm making some "life-style changes", not "dieting".  I've always heard people say that and thought I could never do it....but I am doing it!

Hiatus

Warning:  This blogpost will be sporadic.....and LONG.

Wow.....I've only posted 4 times in April.  This month has flown by!  It has also been a very busy month.  Things at work have been steady to crazy at times.  Life in a new house has been rather chaotic....still haven't found a place for everything....and still can't seem to decide on paint colors....and still have furniture to move to my house....and furniture to put together....and even a couple boxes still to unpack.  As a result, I've had a brief hiatus from the blogging world.

Anywho, here's what I've been up to the last few weeks:

This is what most of the rooms in my house looked like about 3-4 weeks ago....boxes piled high, picture frames leaned against the wall, home decor and furniture thrown into one room.  I don't have any "after" pictures yet, but I can tell you that the stack of boxes is no longer there.

This is a to-scale drawing of my "great room" with to-scale cut-outs to represent furniture (I work in Architecture, give me a break!).  My mom and I went to IKEA last weekend and I got some new bookcases and other furniture to start really making this room more useable (right now there is stuff EVERYWHERE in there).  This will be my hobby/hang out room.

This is a picture of my walk-in closet.  When I moved in, there was one rod across the top and that's it...so I added another lower rod and shelves over each (also, not pictured just to the right are more built-in shelves that were already there too - I LOVE my new closet!)

My new deck furniture!  YAY!

Since moving into my new place, I've had two sets of flowers brought to me as House-Warming Gifts.  The Daffodils are from my Granny "From her garden to my house" she told me.

The Tulips are from a sweet friend, Jess.  Her sister is Jenn - my friend that just moved to Sunny Florida. Check out Jenn's blog here.  Jess and I went Polka Dancing (yes, you read that right) this past Friday.  It was a blast!

Yup, I participated in the 2010 Census - did you?

During their Spring Break, my Sister-in-Law and the Kiddos came in for a visit.  They came over to see my house for the first time (with McDonald's in tow).  Since I don't have a Dining Room table set up yet, they all squeezed around the coffee table to eat with my parents.  They were all sitting on random items that were coffee table height (such as Rubbermaid containers).  But hey, it worked.  After they ate, we played Duck, Duck, Goose in my yard and then went to the local playground until it got dark.

Back at my parent's house, "Tank" and "Goose" (my coded nicknames for the kids, pictured here, respectively) put on an Easter Play complete with bunny rabbits and a very cute rendition of the Peter Cotton Tail Song.

While the boys were inside (the boys being Tank and my Dad), the girls went out on the deck for a little spa action.  I painted Goose's Fingernails and Toenails (and my mom gave her hand & foot massages).

And of course, we couldn't leave out little "Boo" (also a nickname) - so I painted her fingernails and toenails as well, all the while pleading with her to not touch anything.  Deb did great and was holding her hands very daintily the rest of the night so as to not damage the fresh paint job.

My Dad and Tank (otherwise known as Pete and Re-Pete) were inside, fully content to watch baseball all night long (and eat "Chips & Cheese" - a favorite snack at Pawpaw and Nana's).  They are two peas in a pod!  The Tank has a heart of gold and gets very upset when his teams lose.  Considering that two of his favorite teams are the Reds and the Red Sox, I'd say we should stock up on tissues for him this season.

It seems I don't go very long without a road trip of some sort, so April is no exception.  This particular road trip was to Owensboro to pick up some furniture and to see Alisha and Scott, one of my "besties" (and college roomie) and her hubby (and of course her growing baby-bump!)  This picture was while going across the bridge back into KY (I go to O-boro by way of Indiana).

Here they are - the proud mom-and-pop-to-be (this picture was actually from my visit to them a few weeks earlier, but alas I didn't take any of the bump on this more recent trip - what was I thinking?)  But isn't Lish oh-so-cute?

The drive home was rather eventful - I had a piece of beadboard strapped overtop of the love seat that I picked up from Scott and Lish....and somewhere on I-64.......the beadboard flew out of the truck!  It came out from under the bungees (and there were several rows of bungees) and took flight for a few second before landing in the grass median off the road.  I honestly didn't know what to do - I knew I wouldn't be able to get it back on the truck by myself, so I just stepped back on the gas pedal and kept on trucking.  (If it had landed on the road I would have at least dragged it off, but the Good Lord saw fit to have it land out of the driving lane).

Here's a palette of colors I'm considering for my house.  I don't have any particular color picked for any particular room yet, but I am really really into bright fun colors right now, so I'll probably pick from these.  The fabric is from a couch at IKEA that I might get for my Hobby Room.  Any thoughts?

Mmmm....Coffee

Well, it finally happened.  I am a full-fledged, caffeine-loving, mug-wielding, don't-talk-to-me-in-the-morning-til-I've-had-my-fix.....Coffee Drinker.

I blame it on turning 30.

Weigh-in Wednesday

Wowsers!

This week I am down  -2.6 lbs!!!

I fully believe that some of this week's loss was actually some of last week's loss.  What I mean is that I think I had actually lost more than .4 last week, but because I weighed at a different time of the day than I usually do (and with a full belly), it didn't show in last week's weigh-in.  So it makes this week's seem crazy good!

I'm really not denying myself any food in particular (except sweets), just eating smaller portions and being aware of just how much I consume and choosing "good" food over "bad" food more than the other way around.

So, my total weight loss is now.....

Drum Roll please......

-9.2 lbs!!!!!!!

I'm actually kind of amazed at myself over this.  I like to eat.  And I like to eat good, not-healthy-for-you-at-all foods.  So, this is a major accomplishment for me!

Weigh-in Wednesday

Forgot to weigh in yesterday, but remembered this morning.......... -.4 lbs!
Total weight-loss to date: -6.6 lbs.

I've been making better choices when I eat, eating less and working out more.  With this warm weather I've been itching to get outside and enjoy it!  It's easy to get moving around when the day is beautiful and the sun is shining.  Now, if I could only figure out a way to move my desk at work outside....

European Adventure Recap - Sacre Coeur

Sunday October 25, 2009
Paris, France

In Europe in general, you get used to climbing steps.....lots and lots of steps!  We climbed these steps so that we could get to the Sacre Coeur (pronounced Sack-re Kur).

Here's looking back down the steps we climbed.  They go down and to the left and down some more....and some more.

Our first up-close glimpse of the Basilique du Sacre Coeur, which in English means the Basilica of the Sacred Heart (of Jesus).

Built between 1875-1914, the Sacre Coeur is located in an area of Paris known as Montmartre, named after the hill on which the Basilica was built.  Montmartre is translated to mean Mountain of the Martyr, named so for the patron saint of France, Saint Denis, "who was decapitated on the hill around 250 AD."   The original architect was Paul Abadie who won a contest to earn the honor of designing the Sacre Coeur.  He died shortly after construction began and as a result, five other architects were also involved with the project.

The area of Montmartre was home to the art studios of Salvador Dali, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh.  It is also home to the famous cabaret, Moulin Rouge.  Although the area of Montmartre has become a red-light district, the Sacre Coeur is a fixture in the community that stands on the hill as a symbol of hope.

We weren't allowed to take pictures inside the church, but we could go inside and look around.  Here's the doors leading into the vestibule just outside the main sanctuary.  Along with not being able to take pictures inside, you were also not allowed to talk.  Or whisper apparently.  Shannon was rudely and loudly shushed by an attendant inside the church when she whispered something to me about the interior architecture.

This is the underside of the portico on the front of the building.

That's me at the Sacre Coeur!

And there's Shannon!

The Sacre Coeur sits at the highest point of the city, up on a hill and looks out over all of Paris.

It was such a beautiful view - you could literally see for miles.

One thing I love about the Eiffel Tower is you can see it from just about anywhere you are in the city, including the Sacre Coeur.  It was a great point of reference for finding our way to things!

The Basilica is one happenin' place.  Le Petit Train de Montmartre (The Little Train of Montmartre) pulled up for sightseeing tours.

There were people performing tricks right out in front of the Basilica (see the guy standing on several buckets in the middle of the crowd?).
Here's a closer picture of the trick-performing guy.

This lady was singing to the music of her accordion and selling things from her makeshift store.

This man was making key chains by wrapping fluffy pipe cleaners around small wire frames.  He made little animals in all different colors and talked to the crowd through the microphone hanging around his neck.
I bought a few souvenirs while we were there, none of which included a fluffy animal key chain though.
